CHAPTER 9

Sarah and Elizabeth spent the rest of the evening playing with her new toys, sharing her sweets, and baking a sweet rose water cheesecake. Elizabeth found she enjoyed cooking and baking more now that they did not have to adhere to the strict rules of William’s very limited diet. After eating dinner and then reading more from the fairy tale, Sarah fell asleep on the couch in front of the fire. Elizabeth had to carry her to bed. Once the door was shut, she let out a yawn. She wished to go to bed too, but she needed to clean the kitchen before she could retire for the night.

“I am here, I do not wish to startle you.”

Elizabeth yawned again and shook her head. “It seems that I have already become accustomed to your presence Mr. Darcy. Where have you been all day?”

When she looked up at him, he appeared confused.

“I… I do not remember. I thought I was here. But you did not see me?”

Elizabeth joined him in the kitchen and began to wash the dishes. “We were in town for most of the afternoon, as you requested. If you were here then, we would not know of it. Why do you not remember?”

Darcy floated next to her, close enough that she could feel the mist of him against her skin. It gave her a chill that she could not contain and she felt a bit of guilt about it.

“I fear my memories come and go with more frequency as of late. Did you discover anything about my death while conversing with the townsfolk?”

Elizabeth stole one of Sarah’s candies, which she would have to replace later. “We went into every shop we could and only the fishmonger and the gentleman at the apothecary admitted to knowing you. The pharmacist did appear to be hiding something, but he also did not seem terribly interested in sharing information.”

“Why did you not push him further? If he was hiding something, you could have used your… feminine charms to persuade him!”

Elizabeth laughed with incredulity. “My feminine charms? The pharmacist was older than my papa, Sarah was by my side, and my basket was full of fish. I do not think I had much charm to lean on. Also, I was in the apothecary because I had a headache, an ache that persists even now.”

“Well, I am sorry if my death is giving you a headache,” Darcy said. His tone sounded similar to that of Sarah’s when she was overly tired and Elizabeth was not in the mood for an argument.

“You must understand how strange this all is. I spent the day asking questions of strangers on behalf of the ghost that is living in my house…”

“My house,” he interrupted.

“Mr. Darcy, you will have to cease that kind of behavior if there is any chance of us living together in this house until we find out why you are still here. Now, if you do not mind, I wish to take a spoon of this Valerian so my headache will go away and I can sleep.
